Man Survives for three days on Frozen Beer

A man in the US has managed to survive nearly three days trapped in his pickup truck by eating cans of frozen beer.

Clifton Vial couldn't dig his truck out of a snowdrift in western Alaska.

He had no food or water and no coverage on his mobile phone.

The 52-year-old was eventually rescued and the ordeal left him 7kg lighter.

Clifton has not only shown the true meaning of the catchphrase 'survival of the fittest', but also developed a novel strategy for shedding those unwanted winter pounds. There's a spot at the next Team meeting/Bar for you Clifton if you're ever in town. Also the head instructor of 'Freddys Skid School' will more than likely be in attendance offering some advice.

Now for those readers that are struggling to keep up with the amount of new posts recently, rest assured this weeks activity has been an anomaly (akin to TBD moving himself anywhere physically). However, if readership does pique into double figures, posting frequency will be readdressed accordingly.

Until then, senior Team leadership are going international this weekend on a recruiting drive. So any questions regarding calorie consumption and off season training hours can be directed to the slowtwitch forum.

Rolling in the Deep

As the year comes to close, a few things happen; Team Leadership gets restless, the blog gets updated, Team Members reminice about their seasons results- and wonder if they'll be any faster next year and planning for the 6th Annual Boys Night starts 24hrs prior to it taking place.

So a brief summary of the current facts for those that care to read them;

Current Team Leaders PPBD & LLBD have switched to a high intensity training week structure involving pool sessions, UFC training and plenty of sleep.

TBD: Has been MIA since November 2008, word on the street he has been looking at mobile home pads at both ends of town. No longer exercising.

DBD: No longer in a speedo. Current training hack for Team Leaders. Has been tapering for Boys Night and will look to utilize his excellent winter altitude navigation skills this weekend.

ABD: Has been diligent in adding some Brain to the Teams Braun. Collected more trophies this season than Justin Bieber. Will use experience to get through this weekends activities.

KBD: Recently lost a shootout in Arizona, assures fans that it was just a flesh wound. Will bring the 50. calibre and his military drinking skills to the ranch this weekend. Has followed The BBD's advice to be more 'social' and joined twitter.

BHBD: Now branding cattle and chickens at the ranch. Purchased 6 more more pick-ups for boarder runs. Brining a new type of therapy to the table in 2012 involving a taser.

PBD: Invested in a house on the lake (again), and a super light weight, aerodynamic, wind tunnel tested travel trailer with capacity for one tub of gatorade and a foamy. Still riding outside.

LBD: Moving up the food chain, membership still valid if he brings more than a six-pack this weekend. Now owns 4 cats, 2 budgies & a hamster. Taking orders for Team toques & scarfs. NOW OFF THE TEAM, suspension iminent. Back on team until 12pm.

EMBD: Still exercising & not even close to 200lbs. In charge of writing Team training protocol for next season. Has grown Teams equipment hut exponentially, in the running for 'Big Dealer of the Year'. Still confused by Team acornyms.

BDC: Keeping the Team spirit alive in the next valley with borscht, country music and the odd 6 hour commute. Will be back on the horse next year.

VBD: Newest Team member, still on probation. Recently violated team code by wearing a moustache after Nov. 30th. Going 'international' next season.

BBD: In the far north financing next seasons Team activities. Only member who got a tan this year at the Big Show. Keeping up designated Bachelor status to ensure the Team stays grounded during future festivities.

If you didn't make the list you may have done too much or too little exercise, that can be rectified this weekend at the BIG K Ranch though. Standard equipment required.

As the months pass & the Team grows, the BBD's are aware of the need to cater for all those who wish the be involved in 'our' journey for the remainder of the year.
So, three trains have been made available for Team use this coming season. This reflects the newer, more modern policy of inclusion, rather than the previous leaderships efforts of exclusion, which sources tell me were the main factor in the still raw, hostile takeover of late 2010.
As the hibernating months come to a close Team Leaders have issued a new directive, effective immediately. Get on-board your train for 2011.

Ensure you are fully aware of the speeds at which these travel, services offered & that you have purchased a (non-refundable) ticket before climbing aboard.

Option 1: Bullet Train

Travels: Fast
Seats: Not Many
Stops: Never

Option 2: Big Boy Locomotive
Seats: Limited
Fuel Rating: Extreme
Stops: For nothing

Option 3: Tourist Train

Travels: At a leisurely pace
Seats: Everyone else
Stops: All the time

If you don't see a train suitable for you there's a reason for that. Be patient, hang out at the station long enough and you just might find yourself a seat on one of the current options.

Monthly membership update: Not much to report here except rumors are the Team has actively recruited new blood for 2011. Sources tell me that negotiations are still in place and are at a delicate point, however a decision will be made during the later hours of Saturday March 12th or very early on Sunday the 13th.
The only information regarding the candidates identity is a picture of Current Team members conducting their initial suitability interview with the yet to be confirmed candidate.

'I'm French, f*** you'

A French man has been charged with assault and interfering with flight personnel after he was allegedly caught smoking in an aeroplane toilet.

The 34-year-old has been accused with yelling “I'm French, f*** you!”, at airline staff, the Daily Mail reported.

A criminal complaint filed in New York claims 34-year-old Franck Lebrun "did knowingly and intentionally assault and intimidate a flight crew member and flight attendant of the aircraft" during a flight between Nice and New York on Saturday, the Daily Mail said.

During the incident on Delta Airlines flight 83, crew members suspected that someone had been smoking cigarettes in one of the lavatories and confronted Lebrun, telling him not to smoke.

The Daily Mail reported the complaint as saying: "When Lebrun was observed walking toward the bathroom he was again instructed not to smoke.

"Lebrun appeared intoxicated and smelled of cigarettes and alcohol. Lebrun then approached a female flight crew attendant in an aggressive manner and pushed her away with both hands.

"When the airline attendant instructed Lebrun not to touch her, Lebrun pushed her away again with both hands."

Evidence from FBI agent Janet Ambrisco said the Frenchman, part of a group flying to Honduras, "was instructed several times to return to his seat" and that during "the entire encounter with flight crew members, Lebrun was speaking in a confrontational manner using expletives in English and made other comments in French."

A federal air marshal on the plane intervened and instructed Lebrun to return to his seat. Two other marshals confronted him again when he continued to yell expletives and then "aggressively positioned himself toward one of the federal air marshals in a fighting stance".

He was then handcuffed and moved to the rear section of the aircraft.

Lebrun continued to verbally abuse passengers around him, yelling 'I'm French, f*** you!', the document said.

Lebrun was due in federal court this morning.

A new direction

The boardroom has adjourned. We have made some significant changes for the upcoming race season. Do the other team members have a say regarding these changes...NO. If we do not get exactly what we want we will cry. Changes as follow.
1) DBD is now "daddy big deal". On new years we were told "daddy would win us a race this year". The words were slurred. We would be happy if a race was completed. Do you not have to run in a triathlon?
2) GW is now a full team member. LBD. He made us laugh at the mall and has been drinking beer. Enough said. Full membership granted.
3)All members will race "barebones" this year to help shed some of the winter fat.
4) The 4 founding members will race IM CDA

We've hit November folks, if you've made it this far into the year and are still exercising, congratulations. You may stop now.

In more pressing matters, last months hostile takeover remains 'hostile'. I have been in contact with the head negotiator, who represents current Team Members and their 'concerns' surrounding new policies and the direction the Team is heading in. They have informed me (the blog) that the situation remains on 'thin ice'.
Also that the primary cause for the amount of friction between the parties is a "communication" issue. One team Member who spoke on condition of anonymity says;
"It's frustrating, they seem to sleep, eat, socialize, and live the high-life like VIP's, always getting new clothes and hair styles, they even just bought a new car! One of them even had the audacity to text me during a recent event and give me pacing guidelines!"
Reports have also surfaced that the BBD's have ignored repeated requests for a face to face meeting. Also heard on the airwaves, "I see them all the time and they just ignore me, it feels they are about to 'clean house' and bring some new blood in, is seems mine is too old & thin for them"

Well, it looks like it might be a long Winter for those involved here.
An (unauthorized) emergency meeting will be held in December to ensure the right people are in charge going into 2011.

It appears that the new Team Leaders haven't wasted much time in asserting their authority.
The BBD's seem to have found time to learn the required computer and typing skills in between sleeping, eating and 'playing', very smart......
This current takeover may not be 'temporary' as first thought, however other Team members can assure readers (and fans) that it won't last forever.

The Teams current Periodized training schedule has been restructured considerably by the BBD's. After many hours of research, consultation and sleeping the following guidelines are to be adhered to until further notice:

October: Any anaerobic exercise must be performed on a wheeled device of no more than 90min in duration.

November*: Eating

December*: Drinking

Note that combining Nov. & Dec. activities may lead to team issue clothing not fitting in January.

In other news;

DBD: Currently in training for World Masters (XC-Ski), looking to close out his second race of the year in a couple of weeks.

ABD: Running like there's no tomorrow, smack talked KBD out of the Half this weekend

KBD: Mastering the art of Riding a MTB, Cross, Road & TT bike all in one week, whilst staying upright.

TBD: In retirement and moving up the food chain, last seen driving a Porsche and rink-side at the Canucks.

PBD: In hiding, doing time outdoors in Sub Zero temperatures.

GW: Now locking and loading in Pentiction, still only riding for 60min on Thursdays.

EMBD: On the mend, contemplating testing ankle out on new mono-ski this weekend.

BDC: Working up a storm throughout the valley, making a comeback for the 2011 season.

BHBD: Last seen putting up barbed wire at the ranch. Will be driving a tractor to town soon.

The theory that grown men are scared of alligators has once again proved as a myth by none other than 'John McLean'...

Bruce Willis' co-star played a prank on him by leaving a live alligator in his trailer.

Bruce stars in new action movie Red alongside Mary-Louise Parker, Dame Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman. Mary-Louise was determined to test Bruce's reputation as a Hollywood tough guy and decided to try to scare him by placing the reptile in his trailer on the New Orleans film set.

Mary-Louise persuaded actor John Malkovich to take Bruce out for lunch, while she put the alligator in a cooler and hid in his shower to wait for his reaction.

However, Mary Louise was disappointed to discover the animal was so small it failed to frighten her rugged co-star.

"It was more like a bloated lizard," Mary-Louise told the New York Daily News.

In fact rather than shock Bruce with her stunt, the 55-year-old action hero was thrilled she had gone to so much effort for him.

As a senior (or the senior) member of the team I was recently informed there has been a hostile take over. Attempts at negotiations were met with screams and foot stomping at which point I handed over full control of the team. The new leaders were quick to take up the logo and wear it with pride.

Applications are being taken for team names with the understanding that the new leader will veto any poor suggestions. These two DO NOT negotiate!!!

Well, its actually Tuesday but here's the update.

EMBD; still land locked & considered a 'dead weight' in the ski boat.

BHBD; Still alive after a weekend of cheery picker operations at the Ranch.

G-Dub; still choking on the Apple he ate Sunday. No, it is not time to Ski, it is time to drink!!!

The rest of the Team is upward and mobile whilst expending as little energy as possible in preparation for Sunday's Triathlon Competition in town.

It's Getting Hot In Here

Well it's August folks and that means the temperature in The Valley along with the Teams Egos are increasing on a daily basis. The next two weekends will be make or break for some, having said that some are already broken....

EMBD recently sustained an injury that limits his mobility, but fortunately not his intelligence as he has proven very adapt at mastering the use of the two metal sticks he must carry around for the next few weeks.
His situation does have an upside though, it means he is now allowed one of these...

BHBD has embarked on a mission so colossal he may have to call in for reinforcements, not other team members but 17 Mexican migrants to paint the entire Big-K Ranch in a 'soft pearl aqua soothing river blue' color option. The Team hopes the choice is a good one as The Ranch is the official 'Country Residence' and unofficial re-hydration point in hours of need.

Marks cousin is coming to help though, no need for the Mexicans.

LBD is going for full affiliated junior probationary limited membership this week in K-Town. The current undisputed reigning national Age Group Olympic Distance Triathlon Champion will tow the line with some other athletes of less than questionably morals and ability. The Teams Advice; Go Hard or Go Home G-dub!!!

Take a bite out of this and you get membership for the rest of August.

In Other news, the much anticipated Kiwi/Canuck showdown has been postponed due to one Kiwi being very sick. In a similar incident to this we belive.................. At the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the All Blacks had taken all before them and were hot favourites to win the final against the Springboks. However, after they produced a sluggish performance and lost, New Zealand coach Laurie Mains claimed some players had been poisoned by “Suzie”, a waitress at their hotel. Mains even went so far as to hire a private investigator to try to find Suzie, and his claims were backed up by a South African security expert, Rory Steyn, who had been assigned to the team and wrote in his book that the Kiwis had “definitely been poisoned”.

Well it's August and about time someone did some typing instead of training.

It appears that the Team may be making an appearance in Penticton on the 29th of this month. I have it on good account that TBD, ABD, DBD & KBD are all getting their matching Lycra outfits ready for a day of suffering.

TBD is coming in for the Masters C Grade mixed Doubles tennis tournament.
ABD is competing in The Express Home renovation Competition (televised).
DBD has entered the Smokie eating contest which runs from dusk till dawn
KBD has more hair on his face than his head for the Beard Growing Competition.

Each of them will need to rely on their years of experience to make it to the podium in their respective events. Good Luck Boys.

Contrary to Woods recent miss, Some team member's have been hitting the Target. ABD put the Team on the board at the recent Desert HIM, then proceeded the celebrate his endeavors a week later at the first Mid-summers boys night. Alcohol, firearms and probably some tobacco were present.

The tour rolls on, Lance is in relegation mode, the yellow jersey holder is playing domestique and the ITT is still to come.

Stallone slams new movies as 'soft'

Sylvester Stallone thinks modern movies are "too sophisticated" and has slammed current action films for being soft.

The star is fiercely proud of the action films he has starred in, such as the Rambo and Rocky franchises.

He thinks many of the big screen stories around at the moment rely too heavily on CGI and other trickery, when what audiences really want to see are stunts and proper acting.

"There is not a lot of computer tricks. Films today have become too sophisticated. Audiences now just want to see something that's real," he is quoted as saying.

Sylvester's new movie The Expendables is due out later this year. It is about an elite group of men who go to South America to overthrow a dictator, and also stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Jet Li.

Based on the last few posts, it would appear as though the blog is once again pissed off at the team members for their lack of contribution to blogging . I thought I'd better post something before I'm replaced by someone less worthy of a spot on the Team roster.

In my defense, I have been busy buying real estate with Tina, doing some renovations (Tina mostly) and becoming a slum lord, all while working and trying to stay somewhat fit. Other team members have been busy feeding twins, pulling teeth, breaking 12 hrs and 17hrs in Ironman and getting married.

It's all good though because the team can now enjoy post race BBQ's with this view

Unfortunately, the bar did not make it up the hill but we made sure a man cave was included with the new house

On a sad note, my Freedom 55 retirement plan has now been downgraded to Freedom 65!

Surgeon told off for abusing fat patient

A foul-mouthed surgeon has been reprimanded for swearing at a severely obese patient and for punishing her by removing her from a waiting list.
The doctor, known as "Dr B", told his gastric bypass patient, "Ms A", that she was "going on a f****** diet" after she complained she disliked the word "diet" and preferred to talk about "lifestyle".

The woman's weight is not stated, but her body mass index (BMI) is recorded as 168, suggesting that if she is of average height, she would weigh more than 180kg.

She works fulltime, is a mother and reported swimming three times a week, but had repeatedly failed at dieting, quickly regaining weight after relapsing.

Dr B explained to her the necessity of patients changing their lifestyle and dieting if they were to shed kilos and maintain their new weight after the operation.
She told him she disliked the word "diet" and preferred to talk about "lifestyle".
Ms A said in her complaint letter: "[Dr B] disagreed and said if I couldn't handle the word diet then he challenged my motivation and stated that I would never survive surgery because I was still bullshitting myself and therefore my thinking was still f****d."

What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?
Shit happens...........

Team members DBD & PBD were up at altitude midweek making a late run for qualifying spots in the 'Skate-Ski Downhill' event for Vancouver when an incident thwarted their final high speed run, which ultimately may have cost them a spot on the games roster.

PBD reports that a 'mechanical animal' was stalking the pair for most of the morning, although confident they could out-run the device they thought it wasn't intelligent enough to sneak 'uphill' on them. 'We were very surprised when it came out of nowhere, first of all it tried to eat Tom but I followed his lead & took the 'get the f*** off the trail ASAP maneuver'. We both barely escaped- I think it was one layer of Lycra between us and the beasts jaw'. PBD went on to say.

It was then that things got interesting- the device, unable to traverse- stalled, and it was prime time for a counter attack from P & DBD. 'I just stared it down says PBD, and let Tom do all the translating given he was fluent in foul language, I couldn't understand what either of them were saying but it sounded like the beast was hungry.....'

Admin is pleased to report that both left the scene unscathed, however their equipment and the mental state of the beast is another story.....

In other less important news, GW and associates have been performing admirably well given their (temporary) probationary status this season. Admin should point out that all applicants vying for full Team membership must be fluent in 'KBD speak'. The 'easiest' was to achieve this is to join the Team for (multiple) rides of longer then 2 hours and runs in excess of 90min, there you will be submitted to his full linguistic capabilities and a gain a finer understanding of what the hell is actually talking about.

ABD may be moving up the world, literally. All the best with the paper work. The Team are curious as to if the 'Bar' will be making the move 'up the hill'. Yes, we are concerned for the cats too and hope they make the journey without issue, however our main interest lies with a large cabinet that holds precious fluids. Any muscle required to assist with transport- you know who to call.

Team thoughts are with BBD this weekend as he attempts to drink and play sport whilst injured. We wish him the best and add 'It can be done!'

A 'Full Respect' from the Team on this one, he kept his training regime top-secret throughout the winter and surprised us all by presenting himself in peak condition for the flames journey through the Okanaghan. (Word has it that some indoor aqua-activity was involved in his preparation).

Briefly: Any Team comments to the media must be made in the presence of another Team member, makes two of you look stupid instead of one.

Any attempts by Team applicants to modify or change their mode of transport shall be looked on favourably, esp if the vehicle is faster, lower to the ground and has rims larger than GW's waist.

In breaking news team member KBD recently dragged a local undesireable wearing a jacket stolen from his jeep in to the police station. At this point he went to the front desk and said "book em Danno". Officer Curtis replied "who's Danno". It is rather sad that our local police force is not forced to watch re-runs of Hawaii 5-0 to learn the tricks of the trade. Once the dust settled the jacket was returned to it's rightful owner for drycleaning. Good work KBD!!!

In race news the entire team except late entry dark horse AS cracked like walnuts. GW and myself got 3 penalties, JC two penalties. It was decided that the stagger was 17min on the way up so I therefore placed second to the the even splitting AS. JC's last lap was 4 min and 27sec slower than his first lap which is rather embarassing for the team. I can hold my head high as I only had a difference of 4:25. GW was 4:14 but I think he found a website to manipulate the results in his favor.

Next weekend is Telemark, a pursuit race. JC was already trying back out which is not surprising. The reality of having a job and a phone is starting to wear down the young fella :)

The biggest ski race of the year is this weekend. 50km skate just outside of Kamloops. There is always some good carnage out there especially if one goes to the pub the night before. There should be a good showing from Nickel Plate again however word on the street is that KBD and ABD have already pulled the pin. Something about achilles and broken bones... are they not real men? Of those showing up the odds are now up, a 5 minute penalty will be given for any lap(s) more than 2 minutes slower than the first lap. The stagger will be debated on the way up.

An interesting turn of events at todays race. After all the trash talking by GW on his blog he was a no show. Perhaps shopping in Kelowna was more important?

After all the trash talking by Jonny on his blog he found himself in a fierce battle coming into the home stretch of the final few km's of the race. He was able to push ahead of his rival (Patricia) and came across the line screaming "I hone you" Sure Patricia was racing female 50-59 but Jonny did not care and was very proud of his effort. Results below.

OK so the cupboards were bare the morning of this years annual Winterman. I had to improvise and ended up stealing some of the twins formula. The winterman usually leaves me bagged for several days but upon completion I downed several cups of this stuff. Wow!! The next day I felt great and went on to crush Jonny once again. Perhaps I am on to something. I will continue to race and recover with Enfamil this season and see how it goes. The first race is this saturday. Jonny and GW will also be attending. GW was trash talking on his blog so I'm going to start some online betting even if it is illegal. The wager is based on overall time (subtract 5X any negative split) and (add 20X any positive split).

I will generously give a 15 min handicap to Jonny and GW to make things interesting.

Well it's been busy the last few months with office renovations and twin girls that came 8 weeks early. I did however find the time to go for a ski today with GW and Jonnyo. It's a 45 minute drive each way so we had some time to brainstorm. Jonnyo has been using this HTFU saying for 3 or 4 years now and I never knew what it meant until today. I like it. On that note we have decided to start a business venture togeter to market this unique acronym. The problem is Canada is a borderline communist state. If Jonny or myself make any more money it will all go to the tax man....our goal is thus to start a money losing company to claim a loss on our tax returns. We ran this past a team member AGB who works for revenue canada and it's all ligit. The more we lose, the more we get to write off.

Our company is going to be based on selling these high quality markers at 40% below our cost to corner the market. These markers can write HTFU on any hat, shirt or strippers ass in 4 different colours. The average lay person could not afford these markers until now. We are offering a pack of 4 (one of each colour) for $17 plus tax. Like I said this is a big loss for us but that is our goal. A big day

Lots of big stuff has happened lately and even more is about to happen.
DBD is now down 4-1 in the valley and we're sure he couldn't be happier, more details to follow, plus inside information on the land speed record attempt from Penticton to Kamloops.
TBD has been racing above the Teams weight guidelines for the season, however he's been racing so much to keep it off ,the official warning will wait until we move into the off season. Which starts as soon as ABD crosses the white paint on Ali'i drive on Saturday, 1243 are his numbers to watch, which is a lot of ink to be carrying around, he can bench 250 so I wouldn't worry about it. KBD is still busy on administration duties but has still managed to find a way to injury himself.
Tune in next week to see what sort of damage the Team has done (to themselves) over the weekend.

1- Podium place for ABD who came close to removing his helmet early after an altercation with a race official in T2. Diplomacy won the day in the end and ABD was allowed to run onward to third place in his division.

30- degrees this weekend for TBD who is looking fit, angry and close to 40, should be a good day on Sunday for him.

1- night ABD has left to drink beer before the whip starts to really crack.

Summer Happenings

A few things to mention since the last blog post for all of our faithfull blog followers......

-one week after the crushing of the field at the Great White North Half Ironman, Dr. Big Deal won the Desert Half Ironman in Osoyoos. In doing this, he broke the course record with a 4:01:51 clocking and became the 2009 Canadian Long Course Champion. KBD raced in Osoyoos as well, one week after winning the Squamish Olympic tri. I believe he was feeling a bit flat on the bike, but used his awesome foot speed to run a 1:17:16 half marathon and put himself in 4th position.

-On this same day, TBD raced the Vancouver Half Iron and placed 13th overall and 1st age-grouper against a competitive field. Apparently he didn't go off the run course on this one!

-TBD races again one week later at the Peach Classic and places 9th overall and 3rd in M35-39. Well done considering Friday night's debauchery!

-Quasi team member, G-Dub, also raced the Peach Classic and placed 12th overall. Well done G-dub! check out his blog for his own comments of the race.

-Ruby got a summer haircut - I was told to take note of it.

-As for me, I've done nothing since the Great White North on July 5. I've had 3 weeks off training and I've spent some good quality time with ABDGF (Tina). I watched every stage of the Tour, took a week off work, drank plenty of beer and we saw some whales too! To top it off, Tina and I went to our 20 year high school grad reuinion this past weekend......yes, we are old! I feel good....I'm rested physically and mentally. I started some training this week to just "shake off the cobwebs" as DBD would say.

-Watch for KBD and BD Cook this weekend as they head to Calgary for the inagural Calgary 70.3 Event. Good luck guys and enjoy the trip!

Last Weekend, This Weekend,

Last Sunday the Earth moved in Stony Plain, AB. Team leader DBD, crushed the 'Great White North Half-Iron' course in such a way that they are still surveying the damage.
"It's just un-repairable" said a frustrated Pat Smith who's in charge of street repairs for the area. "I've seen some shit-kicked out of roads in my time but this takes the cake". Smith provided these photos of the damge and an image of the man he thinks is responsible. "If I see him up this way again I'll be giving him a shovel, I know he works with small tools and fixes things so he should come and take responsibility for the mess he created", a now angry Smith says.

The editor can also confirm that shortly after this picture was taken DBD disappeared, and it wasn't to shirk away from relaying some pavement. "I had to undergo mandatory age-testing, I was pretty much whisked away and went through a comprehensive series of tests to prove I was the age I submitted on the entry form".
DBD was asked to identify several pictures of automobiles and advertisement's, music snippets and popular Beer brands all hailing from an era that no one knows much about.
All tests were passed without issue apart from the 'Personal Memory' section that registered a 'fail' until a medical certificate was produced confirming that DBD is in fact 'hugnent'.
"It's a relatively new disorder & research is still being done on it's effects on the human body. I'm not taking anything for it (yet), I'm resilient enough to handle it" DBD comments.

ABD put on another solid performance @ the GWN, despite having to race on a ripped up course.
A top ten result on a less than optimal day is a respectable showing. "I've moved on" says ABD.

Meanwhile in Squamish BC, TBD & KBD attacked a short course event with valour & vigor.
TBD so much so that he was on world record pace for a majority of the day untill he was politely informed that the run course was in fact two laps. Some pride and a few places lost, but an AG win nonetheless.
KBD swan like a girrafe, rode like an Ox and ran like a gazzell. "I raced to an animals of africa theme" he says. I even camped out the night before to get myself in the mood at a Candian safari park but the only thing I saw was a rabbit"

Flying the Flag in Squamish

This weekend both DBD & KBD will both 'back-up' in the Desert Half in Osoyoos. I wouldn't place any money on them as they got enough of that last week.
ABD will be supplying beverages post-race or perhaps during if circumstances dictate. It'll be hot enough to thats for sure.

The 09' season is well underway and the Team has shown all the early signs that their sponsors will be proud of, some recent highlights include;

-Premature aging by TBD who's approaching (or is in) his 5th decade of spreading his goodwill and sobrietry across the Globe.

-G'dub getting 'schooled' in a sprint-tri by a 'school-boy', however showing some backbone by coming back to take the MOS title two weeks later. Picture from the race below, note the form-fitting skin-suit.

-ABD's secret gym training is paying off with a couple of solid performances in Oliver, although he seems to be out-growing his Team issue shorts.
Bike transportation is also an area that needs some attention, you don't want to go scuffing no interior! See the EMBD for the below item.

-DBD is well on his way to owning the podium in the valley this summer, his most loyal training partner has even adopted a team issue trim (ABD take note). A new trophy & check transporter is being looked into as well, initial option below.

KBD heads to the great potato harvest in Idaho this Sunday, he is expecting a 'big-crop' this year. He has also informed the editor that if he doesn't make it back into Canada post-race, he'll nominate a (yet to be determined) replacement to fill his spot on the roster.

The season is underway, although due to a lack of effort in reporting results I cant remember who has done what so far...
Some half marathons have been run & won, some marathons have been started and not finished. There have even been some triathlon results from ABD & G-dub who both fared well last weekend.

It's as much a staple of New Zealand sweet confectionary as pineapple lumps and spearmint leaves, but the marshmallow Eskimo has been deemed offensive to native Canadians and may require a makeover.

Canadian tourist Seeka Lee Veevee Parsons, 21, an Inuit of the Nunavut Territory in Canada, was shocked when she found the lollies for sale last week, saying they are an insult to her people.

The word Eskimo was unacceptable in her country and carried with it negative racial connotations, she told the Taranaki Daily News.

The correct term was Inuit, Ms Parsons said.

"I was taken aback. When I was a little girl white kids in the community used to tease me about it in a bad way. It's just not the correct term."

She intends sending packets of the iconic confectionary to the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and her grandfather, a Inuit tribal elder in the Nunavut Territory.

Not only has the name of the lolly aroused painful memories, she believes the shape is an unfair stereotype of her people.

On this occasion I must stand by my country. I was eating these before the complainant was born, these lollies basically keep me alive at primary (grade) school, and without them I wouldn't be the athlete I am today.

I respect the Inuit people, however I respect my right to eat 'eskimos' in the form of confectionary even more so. I hope Mr. Harper appreciates the taste too.

Oliver 10km; It was 50% Easy, 50% Hard.
I put the foot down at half-way to get away from the two grey-haired runners that were keeping me company.
Got a bottle a wine and something to drink it out of once I finished.
The sun was out and matched the team footwear. All in all a good day capped off with a coke and croissant stop at the SMM on the ride home.

Mother-in-law attacked with anti-tank missile launcher

A desperate husband tried to kill his mother-in-law with an anti-tank missile launcher after claiming she'd turned his wife against him.

Bosnian Miroslav Miljici wanted revenge after blaming his wife's mum for the break-up of his marriage.

And when his mother-in-law survived the rocket attack on her home, he tried to finish her off with a machine gun, a court in Doboj, Bosnia, was told.

She survived both attacks with barely a scratch, judges heard.

The Rack

Thursday nights are an occasion for some team bonding, we discuss the week that was and the weekend that will be, in between testing our legs and lungs on the infamous 'Naramata Dipper'.

This week GW showed up to complete the quartet with an all alloy rig, complete with fenders and the 'rack' (for commuting apparently) which was one of the main topics of discussion;
how heavy was it?
how did it feel?
how did it cope with a load on it?
how close could we get to it?
All questions that were dutifully answered in an articulate and humorous manner that only someone of GW's standing could.

DBD came up with a points system that favored those with a good memory and arithmetic skills, and a new road-kill burial policy. Points were bravely fought for and everyone showed their true colors (if not their fitness) through the ride;
We complained about who was leading,
We talked about who wasn't there and could beat if they were,
We talked how little wind there was,
We talked about the rack,
We wondered what a $600 pair of new skis would feel like.

ABD didn't quite get to four figures on the ride, however 'it's still early season'. We think he spent too much time at aqua-fit classes during the week.

GW pressed us all hard to the end and gave KBD some more than complimentary lead-outs and mechanical advice to ensure he made the podium. His rack gained some well earned respect too.
Someone is knocking hard on the Team door, it's a heavy door though and requires many a hand to open it, though apparently if you are drunk you can do it by yourself.

Title: Superbad (2007)

They Say: 'Come Get Some!'

I Say: 'Immature beyond belief'

I remember laughing once during the screening, the problem was it wasn't at the film. Never have I been subjected to such crudeness and rampant teenage debauchery. The audience would have voted with their feet but the doors were locked to get the numbers who actually have seen the movie into double figures...
Bizarre scenes were supposedly linked to a visonless plot revolving around a bottle of alcohol, fake id, inept cops and the 3 bumbling teenagers remained a mystery right to the end and forever will, as fate intervened when the DVD player (sensing the audience unrest), 'took one for the team' and shut itself down, permanently; before any sense could be made of the script.
It was a tough way to go out for a player that has no doubt screened many a fine movie, it unfortunately will be remembered by it's final act, playing a movie that was indeed; Super....Bad.

Reality Bites

The Trifecta is complete. This summary post was delayed to allow extra recovery time in lieu of an extension of Sundays activities and for Team Members to fully absorb their accomplishments of the previous 48hrs.

It started with a ski race, which ABD said was flat and had some 'downhill' in it. I have an altitude graph which proves otherwise. Despite bringing the wrong equipment (skis instead of snowshoes) the Team performed admirably. DBD turned on some 'OMS' (briefly), ABD enjoyed his downhill section & KBD stayed upright (mostly) and managed to muscle his way around the 30km route.
Overall, conditions were unique and probably never to be experienced again. The photo below doesn't do the day justice, when the vets are grumbling you knew it was ugly.

Next up was the 5km pound, the first km was icy and it just got worse from there. the good thing was it only took about 10>20% of the Ski time to complete.
Props to the young stud in the death -metal T-shirt for the lead out.

Then the Masters meet which provided the biggest hurt of all, the Team paraded its colors with valor and distinction but were denied by a hairy and older squad in the Marquee event, the 4x50mt relay. Plenty of ribbons collected across the board though and something that was worth celebrating.

Thanks must go to;
G-Dub, for making 3 out of the 4 activities. Discussions will continue on his membership standing as his recovery strategy cannot yet (read NEVER WILL) be endorsed by the Team.
Al, who went from a mild-mannered dentist to an anaerobic swimming machine in the blink of an eye.
Respective spouses and partners for approving and encouraging the Team through the demands of the weekend.
And finally the Okanagan Spring Brewery.

Team members are advised of this weekends pending activities and are encouraged to keep in mind that a dismal performance in any of the events will result in removal of certain team privileges for a period of time (to be determined by the person who performs least dismally).

The Team has a strict requirement for all members to be at race weight at certain times of the season. As a few are struggling with those last few pounds despite the current exercise regime, the product below is proposed as a solution for your current dilemma (even for those who have 'drifted away from elite level fitness').
I will put in a request to the equipment manager for a sample of this product. The best thing is one size fits all so we can share the suit, those with a history of not laundering Team Issue clothing are advised to purchase their own individual suit.

Terror on The Track

It seems the Team has met it's first immovable object of the season. Without reason and provocation DBD & ABD encountered a 'gentlemen' who believed that wearing an oilers cap allowed him to progress in a direction that was counter the normal flow of traffic at the beautiful indoor track facility here in Penticton (thanks Adidas & IMC).

Maybe he got there first?
Maybe he took objection to comments made about his walking speed?
Maybe he's bitter it's been 20 years since his team touched the cup?
Maybe he thought he was still in Edmonton?

Should he be encountered again (indoors or outdoors) he shall be addressed as 'BBD', Bitter Big Deal. Let's keep an eye out for him and welcome him to the roster if we happen to 'run' into him again.

So I was lurking on the Slowtwitch forum the other day because I had nothing better to do and I came across this photo:

1983 Windermere Loop

Can you guess who it is? Thats right, it's Dr. Big Deal (aka Dr. Tommy) at age 15. Check out the thick head of hair!!

Tom is that a half-shirt? It goes well with those socks!

Here is what he has to say about the photo:

"This was the 1983 Windermere loop. I had just turned 15 and did one bike and one run to get ready for this race. I had a 10 min lead out of the water and was second onto the bike...it took awhile to get those socks on :) I did this race again in 1984 and then took a 16 year break from triathlon. 1983 (3:24:40) - 27:14 swim + 1:44 bike + 1:13 run 1984 (2:57:23) - 27:08 swim + 1:33 bike + 56:39 run 2001 (2:37:40) - 25:51 swim + 1:16 bike + 55:12 run splits for the 2150 swim, 55km bike, 12km run...in 2001 I was swimming way slower but used a wetsuit"

I'm pretty sure he spent the 16 year break from triathlon going to dental school, eating nachos and drinking beer.

For those of you who don't know, the above picture represents the original founder of Team Big Deal. He hales from Sydney, Australia. He arrived in Canada many years ago with a bag of tennis trophies and dirty laundry. He has a lovely family. When he is not spending time with the family or working, we believe he is drinking beer. He may train sometimes.

He is not only the team founder but he is also the apparal supplier for the team. He recently provided the team with new jackets that have been useful for training and storing turkey skin in the pockets.

He is THE Big Deal. Make sure you respect him, as you can see from this post, the team does.

In Good Company

The Team has made a bold leap, just in time for Christmas too. A team issue jacket has been delivered via the equipment manager via TBD to all members who have finished a race this season and remain on the the roster at the time of this posting.
Some initial guidelines have been established by the equipment manager with regards to the wearing and conduct of members whilst wearing official team clothing;
1. Jacket will be zipped up when cameras are present (particularly during the off-season).
2. The jacket is to used for physical activity only (it is not a fashion piece).
3. Alcoholic beverages are NOT to be consumed when wearing the jacket.
4. Jacket is to be laundered weekly and stored on its own hanger at room temperature.

So if you are photographed in a bar with the jacket, unzipped, with nacho stains on it and holding a drink you should consider that a violation of the rules above.
Consequences have yet to be established for a violation, someone else can come up with those.

Half of women prefer web to sex, says survey

Many women would rather surf the net than have sex, according to an Intel-sponsored survey.

The Internet Reliance in Today's Economy survey of 2119 people aged 18-plus, said that 65 per cent of adults admitted they can't live without the internet.

According to the survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, nearly half of women (46 per cent) and 30 per cent of men would rather go without sex for a fortnight than give up internet access.

For women aged 18-34 it was 49 per cent and for women aged 35-44 it was 52 per cent. Only 39 per cent of guys aged 18-34 would swap the bedroom for the broadband.

Looking Out For The Team

Every Team needs one of these guys; someone who can go from mild mannered, slightly jovial and sociable 9>5 office worker to a man-beast that can rip your legs or head off in matter of seconds or hours (you choose). In fact if see you him reach for a cup of Gatorade or Pint of pale ale, you can kiss your chances of surviving the encounter goodbye.

With strong performances through the season, zero DNS/DNF's against his name and a desire to find the closet watering hole on completion of most activities expect him to, literally, double in size next year. That is a scary thought.

ABD as he is known has even made several significant purchases with the Team in mind, which are pictured below. A penthouse suite with all the trimmings, including a Plasma TV. (expect many a fine gathering to take place in the future here).
The real prize though and one the team appreciates greatly is the purchase of the new Team Car! (well it took two goes, but ABD got it right the second time!). It consumes & uses fuel like certain members use beer. It will easily fit 4 men, 4 bikes and 4 cases of natures finest.

The judges have spoken.
Its been a turbulent year for the newest member to the team. Having attained membership through the rigorous selection procedure, KBD was finally accepted via text message. Under the impression that it was a Body Building Team he purchased his baggy pants, string singlets and extra syringes. However there proved to be no use for those, actual requirements were a strong liver, knowledge of the Ales of British Columbia and North America and the ability to turn up on time. Most of which, despite his military experience, proved to be challenging on several occasions.
The inability to keep a kitchen tidy during a particularly period of the season may have also proved costly. (Certain other teammates shared the lack of effort in that area).
Perhaps more drinking and less training the judges would say.

The whereabouts of a key member on November 1st this year still remains a mystery to all. The team was primed and ready to be tested, however one link in the chain remained idle. Untested, it lay gathering rust, corroding by the hour. That is until an aging, dying gladiator put his body on the line (literally, thanks S.C.), to ensure a full complement fronted up on Panama City Beach come Saturday morning. For those that missed the action The Team raced and drank bravely that weekend, it was s sight to see, reaping the rewards of their performances with little or no regard for those MIA.

Obese have right to two airline seats

Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled.

The high court declined to hear an appeal by Canadian airlines of a decision by the Canadian Transportation Agency that people who are "functionally disabled by obesity" deserve to have two seats for one fare.

The airlines had lost an appeal at the Federal Court of Appeal in May and had sought to launch a fresh appeal at the Supreme Court. The court's decision not to hear a new appeal means the one-person-one-fare policy stands.

The appeal had been launched by Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and WestJet.
